Thrifty Sister Newsletter Vol 6, Issue 26 – May 4, 2014

Greetings, Thrifty Sisters, and Happy May! With May Day baskets behind us, it is time to look forward to celebrating our Moms next weekend. I sincerely hope that many of you had an opportunity to grill over the past week. I know that my hubby and I are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to do so! While we wait for grilling season, let us start bringing those day dreams of gardening to a reality!

I am sure that some of you have your seedlings sprouted and are ready to dig in! With Mother’s Day just around the corner, our gardens in the Northern Regions will start to come together! My Dad says to have your bulbs in the ground by May 1. I started putting bulbs out yesterday, dreaming of gorgeous Glads and Fairy Lilies. Next in will be the Cannas and Calla Lilies. Thinking of the cannas, made me think of the hummingbirds that I am going to want to attract to my yard this year. I can’t wait to go plant shopping this year!

No matter what your gardens plans will be this year, I am sure that we all have some special experiments that we are going to try out. Are you new to gardening, or have a small space – maybe even an apartment patio? Consider all of the small container garden ideas that seem to be popping up. If one thinks of gardening like jazz music, then simple is best. The above web site offers many ideas and repurposing suggestions! This year I have a large “salad bowl” planter on the patio. It is a huge round planter that is only about 8 to 10” high, but about 24” wide – very similar to a gi-normus salad bowl. I planted 4 salad seed options and I am enjoying watching these little sprouts show themselves. Another planter experiment that I am trying is growing carrots in a pot. For the past two seasons, I have grown carrots, and have successfully broken them trying to remove them from the garden. After the success with the potato bags last year, and literally just dumping out my harvest and sifting through the dirt to find my potatoes, I am hoping that carrot harvesting will be just as easy.

And of course, with the return of better weather, so returns the idea that it will be easier to boost your over all health, and return to walking, or running, or whatever health regime may have slipped past you during these past few months. I have noticed that while walking up and down stairs I am more “creaky” sounding as of late. That just tells me that I need to get back at it and start doing more than just equipment moving!
