Thrifty Sister Newsletter Vol 6, Issue 10 – September 29, 2013

Greetings, Thrifty Sisters!  My goodness, look what happens when I don’t post for a couple of weeks – Autumn just sneaks right in there! I hope that you are all enjoying your seasonal transition and enjoying putting up your late summer early fall harvest.  I started doing a small amount of fall clean up outside this past week, and I am rather sad to see the summer season slowly leaving us. There is a crispness in the evening air and the leaves are just starting to turn to their fall colors.  Do you know that the SDSU Hobo Day Parade is a week away? Now that certainly sounds like a fall event, doesn’t it? Marching bands and football games, complete with tailgating and fall orchards and pumpkin picking with family and friends… I guess those items do make the seasonal transition more fun!

Earlier this summer we received some homegrown potatoes, and I know that it might be time to check in on my own potatoes.  What does a Thrifty Sister do with an extra load of potatoes thus not letting them rot and stink up the cabinet? Why, frozen hash browns, of course – or consider frozen cubed potatoes for soups and casseroles. Another fantastic recipe find that my hubby discovered was a Mexican Chicken Casserole dish. Sean made it one evening, but the next day we were going camping.  Since I didn’t want to let our casserole go to waste, I froze half of the leftovers, and packed up the other half to use at the campfire. We made a lovely breakfast fire, scrambled up some eggs and tossed in this casserole, and WOW!  This got us talking about how this basic recipe could be used for so many things – thaw and use it for burritos, soups, or quick lunches, breakfasts, etc!  I think that this recipe is going to become a mainstay in our home for fast and easy meals! Of course, with the change of seasons in the air, don’t forget to take care of your skin!  With the cooling of the air, and the humidity levels begin to drop, one is going to notice a change in their skin. Have no fear, spa pampered skin is only as far away as your pantry! Have you considered sugar scrubs?  A lovely companion to the salt scrubs, one can also make their own sugar scrubs.  My friend Amy gave me a charming collection of bath goodies for my birthday, and I have been sugar scrubbing myself silly… and then it ran out. Let’s add a crafty idea to the mix!  I have finally caught up my family photo album and am ready to start our Ireland trip photos – Boy, am I eagerly waiting for an opportunity to start scrapbooking those photos and memories. One of the things that I want to incorporate in the scrapbook are maps – creative ways to help us remember where in the world Cobh, Ireland is located, for example.
